What is a .HBK file?
A .HBK file is a type of file used by Mathcad, which is software designed for engineering calculations. This file acts like a table of contents for a digital book created in Mathcad, guiding the reader through the different sections of the book in a specific order. It's similar to how the binding of a physical book keeps its pages in order. You can make an .HBK file with simple text editing tools like Notepad or Microsoft Word, but you have to make sure to save it as a plain text file.
To open an .HBK file, you'll need to use a program called PTC Mathcad Prime 5.0. This software allows you to view and interact with the contents of the Mathcad Handbook File.
Here's where you'll find .HBK files: Inside a folder named HANDBOOK, which is located in the Mathcad Professional folder on your computer. If this HANDBOOK folder doesn't exist, you'll need to create it yourself. This is where you'll store both your .HBK files and any Mathcad worksheets you're working with.
To open an electronic book in Mathcad, follow these steps: 1. Navigate to the location on your computer where the .HBK file is saved. 2. In Mathcad, go to the Help menu and select "Open Book." 3. Look for the .HBK file you want to open, click on it, and then click "Open." If you have a specific handbook you want to use, like the Queuing Theory Handbook from a CD, you'll need to manually install it. First, find or create a Handbook folder in the Mathcad Professional directory on your computer. Then, copy the Queuing folder and the queuing.hbk file from the CD and paste them into the Handbook folder in the Mathcad Professional directory. After doing this, you'll be able to access the handbook through Mathcad by going to Help, then Open Book, and selecting the appropriate .HBK file.
It's worth noting that Mathsoft, the original creator of Mathcad, was acquired by Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) in 2006.
