What is a .I01 file?
The .I01 file extension is part of a series of files created by a program called DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink is a tool used to make DVD-Video data smaller so it can fit onto a single DVD-R disc. When you use DVD Shrink to compress a DVD, it might split the compressed data into several files instead of just one. These files are saved in a sequence. The first file in this sequence ends with .I00, the second file (which we are talking about) ends with .I01, the third one ends with .I02, and so on.
These .I01 files, along with the other files in the sequence, are like pieces of a puzzle. When put together, they recreate the original DVD data in a compressed form. To use these files, you usually also need a .MDS file. This .MDS file is like a map; it tells your computer how all the pieces (the sequence of files) fit together to form the complete picture (the compressed DVD).
To open or work with an .I01 file, you can use DVD Shrink, the program that created it. But there are also other programs that can open these files, such as Alcohol 120%, DT Soft DAEMON Tools, and even some apps on Android devices like File Viewer for Android. These programs understand how to read the .I01 file and its companions, using the map provided by the .MDS file to correctly assemble and use the compressed DVD data.
