What is a .INPROGRESS file?
The .INPROGRESS file extension is used for a special kind of file called a Time Machine Backup Progress File. This type of file is made by Time Machine, which is the program that comes with Mac OS X 10.5 and newer versions to help you back up your files. When Time Machine is backing up your files, it creates .INPROGRESS files to keep track of how the backup is going. Once the backup is finished, these files are automatically deleted.
To open or work with an .INPROGRESS file, you would typically use Apple Time Machine, which is included with the operating system on your Mac. You don't usually need to open these files yourself because they are handled by Time Machine in the background.
.INPROGRESS files are made and removed by the system without you seeing them. But, if something goes wrong and the backup doesn't finish properly, you might find an .INPROGRESS file left on your computer. If you see this file and aren't sure what to do, it's a good idea to talk to an Apple representative. They can help make sure your data is safe and fix any problems with the backup.
It's also worth noting that .INPROGRESS files are stored in a special format used by Mac OS X called a package. If you really need to, you can look inside one of these files by right-clicking it and choosing "Show Package Contents." This lets you see the backup data inside, but it's usually not necessary to do this for regular use.
