What is a .JBX file?
A .JBX file is a type of music file that was created using a program called Microsoft Play It!. This program was part of a special package called Microsoft Plus! for Kids!, which was designed to make computers more fun and accessible for children between the ages of 3 to 12. Microsoft Plus! for Kids! was an add-on to the Windows 95 operating system, released back in 1997. It included various features like kid-friendly desktop themes and several programs aimed at entertaining and educating young users. One of these programs was Microsoft Play It!, essentially an electronic keyboard software. It allowed children to experiment with creating their own music or playing with sound effects. When kids made a song or a sound sequence they liked, they could save it as a .JBX file. This file would contain all the data needed to replay the song or sound effects exactly as they were created in the Play It! program. However, it's important to note that these .JBX files were specifically designed to work with Microsoft Play It! and cannot be opened or used by any other software. While it was also possible to export these creations as .MIDI files, doing so would not include any of the unique sound effects added in Play It!, just the basic musical notes. Unfortunately, Microsoft Plus! for Kids! and by extension, Microsoft Play It! have been discontinued, which means it's no longer being updated or supported, making it difficult to access or use .JBX files today.
