.JNP File Extension

A .JNP file is a Java Web Start File, created by Oracle.

Open with Oracle Java Web Start (Discontinued). Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .JNP file?

A .JNP file is a type of Java file that is used to help start and manage Java programs or small applications called applets right from a web browser. Think of it as a set of instructions that tells your computer how to run a Java program over the internet. For this to work, your computer needs to have something called the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed. The JRE is like a translator that understands the Java language and can execute Java programs.

The .JNP file is closely related to the Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP), which is a fancy way of saying it's a method for launching Java programs across a network like the internet. Inside a .JNP file, there's information pointing to where the actual Java program is located (usually a .JAR file) and which part of the program to start first. This file is written in a code format known as .XML, which is a standard way to store and transport data.

Even though the .JNP file is meant to be used with a program called Oracle Java Web Start, this program is no longer being updated or supported. However, you can still open and look at the contents of a .JNP file using any basic text editor, like Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac. This is because, at its core, a .JNP file is just a text file that follows the XML format. So, if you're curious, you can open it up and see the instructions inside, but remember, running the Java program as intended requires the JRE and possibly a compatible web browser or tool that understands how to use these instructions.

It's important to note that ".jnp" is just another version of the more commonly seen ".jnlp" file extension. They serve the same purpose but just have a different name.
