What is a .KKK file?
A .KKK file is a type of file that has been locked by a harmful computer program known as the KKK Virus. This virus is a form of ransomware, which means it's designed to take your files hostage. The KKK Virus sneaks into computers pretending to be something harmless, like an update for Adobe Flash Player or Java, or it might come attached to an email. Once it gets onto your computer, it starts to mess with your files. It can take any file you have, like a video file (.WMV) or an Excel spreadsheet (.XLSX), and lock it using very strong codes, known as the RSA algorithm and AES-128 ciphers. After locking your files, it changes their names to end with .KKK, making them impossible to open or use as you normally would.
This problem started happening to a lot of people around June 2017. The virus, after locking your files, leaves a note on your computer. This note is like a message from the criminals behind the virus, telling you that they have your files and will only give them back if you pay them money.
To deal with a .KKK file, the usual programs for opening files won't work because the file is encrypted. One of the ways to try and get your files back without paying the ransom is using a feature on your computer called System Restore. This feature can sometimes undo the damage by taking your computer back in time to a point before the virus attacked. However, it's important to note that dealing with ransomware is tricky and there's no guarantee that System Restore will work for every case. It's always a good idea to seek professional help if you're not sure what to do.
