What is a .LG2 file?
A .LG2 file is a type of log file used by Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ), which is a system included in Windows operating systems. MSMQ helps different applications on various networks to communicate with each other even if they are not online at the same time. This communication is done asynchronously, meaning it doesn't require both applications to be active simultaneously.
The .LG2 file specifically stores information about the state of message logs that are currently being recorded in a .MQ file. These .MQ files hold the messages sent between applications. If an application sends a message and the receiving application is offline, the message is saved in a .MQ file until the recipient is available to receive it. To prevent data loss, MSMQ uses both .LG1 and .LG2 files to temporarily keep a log of the message information in case the .MQ file gets corrupted while it's being written.
The .LG2 files, along with .LG1 files, are crucial for ensuring that no data is lost during the message queuing process. These files are typically found in the MSMQ\Storage folder on a system that uses MSMQ. Each .MQ file, which can grow up to 4 MB in size, is associated with these log files. When an .MQ file reaches its maximum size, a new .MQ file is created, and the .LG1 and .LG2 files continue to log the state of these files.
To open a .LG2 file, you would generally use Microsoft Message Queuing, which is included with the Windows operating system. This file type is mainly relevant to developers or system administrators who manage applications that use MSMQ for message queuing.
MSMQ was developed by Microsoft and first introduced in earlier versions of Windows, such as Windows NT 4 and Windows 95. It is particularly useful for ensuring reliable communication across different networks and systems, which may not always be connected or active at the same time.
