What is a .LOCKY file?

A .LOCKY file is a type of file that has been encrypted by a harmful software known as the Locky virus. This virus is a form of ransomware, which means it locks or encrypts files on a victim's computer and demands payment for their release. Typically, the Locky virus targets common file types like images (.JPG) or documents (.DOCX) and uses strong encryption methods, specifically the RSA algorithm and AES-128 ciphers, to make them inaccessible.

The Locky ransomware became widely recognized in 2016 and functions similarly to other ransomware types, such as those that produce .ODIN files. The virus usually enters a computer through deceptive means, such as an email attachment pretending to be a legitimate document (often an invoice) that tricks the user into enabling macros, which then installs the ransomware.

Once installed, the Locky virus begins to encrypt files, changing their names and converting them into .LOCKY files. Alongside encrypting the files, it creates a ransom note in a .TXT format, explaining that the files have been encrypted and providing instructions on how to pay a ransom, typically demanded in bitcoin, to get the decryption key needed to unlock the files.

Opening or accessing the contents of a .LOCKY file directly is not possible without decrypting it first. The primary method suggested for potentially restoring these files is through system restore or by using backup copies of the affected files if available. It is crucial to note that paying the ransom does not guarantee that the files will be decrypted or restored.

Due to the nature of the Locky virus and other ransomware, it is highly recommended to maintain regular backups of important data and to implement strong security measures, including updated antivirus software and caution with email attachments, to prevent infection.
