What is a .LXE file?

An .LXE file is a type of file known as a Modo Environment Preset File. It is used with the software Foundry Modo, which is a sophisticated tool for creating 3D models, textures, animations, and highly realistic renderings. The .LXE file contains a preset, or a saved setting, that includes a customized environment. This environment might be a full scene complete with lighting and mesh objects (3D models).

Foundry Modo, the program that opens .LXE files, is widely used by professional 3D designers. These designers often work on a variety of projects such as designing packaging for products, creating footwear, setting up interior room designs, developing characters for video games, producing special effects for films, and constructing architectural models. Using presets like those saved in .LXE files helps these designers save time because they can reuse settings that they apply frequently across different projects.

To create an .LXE file in Foundry Modo, you can go to the menu and select File → Save Environment Preset..., or you can right-click on a material layer in the "Shading" tab on the right panel of the interface and choose Save Environment Preset from the context menu.

It's important to note that Foundry Modo was previously known as Luxology Modo before the company Luxology merged with Foundry. This software is the only program that can natively open and use .LXE files.
