What is a .M4P file?
The file extension .M4P represents an iTunes Music Store Audio File, which is a type of protected audio file format. Specifically, it is an .AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) file that has been secured with Apple Computer's "Fairplay" Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. This DRM protection restricts the number of computers that can play the file, allowing it to be played on up to five authorized computers only.
To open and play a .M4P file, you can use several programs provided by Apple. The primary program used to be Apple iTunes, although it has been discontinued and replaced by Apple Music, which is included with the operating system on Apple devices. Another option is Apple QuickTime Player, which is also included with the operating system.
To play a protected .M4P file, you must first authorize your computer. This involves logging into Apple Music or the previously used iTunes with the username and password associated with the account that originally downloaded the file. Once authorized, you can play the .M4P file on your computer, and you can authorize up to five different computers using the same account to play the file.
