What is a .MBZ file?
A .MBZ file is a type of file used specifically by Moodle, which is a platform many educational institutions use to create and manage online courses. This file format is essentially a backup of a course from Moodle. It includes all the important components of the course such as its structure, settings, and content, all compressed into a single archive using Zip compression.
To use a .MBZ file, you typically need to be involved with teaching or managing courses on a Moodle site. The file allows educators to save and preserve entire courses. For example, a teacher might want to back up a course at the end of a semester or school year, and then use this backup to restore or recreate the course later.
To open a .MBZ file, you can upload it directly to a Moodle site. If you are an administrator or have the necessary permissions, you can do this by going to the navigation drawer on your Moodle site, clicking on "Site administration," then "Courses," and finally "Restore course." Here, you can either choose the .MBZ file from your computer or drag and drop it into the designated area to start the upload.
If you want to view or use the contents of a .MBZ file outside of Moodle, you can do so by changing the file extension from .mbz to .zip. This is because a .MBZ file is actually a Zip file that has been renamed for use in Moodle. Once you've changed the file extension to .zip, you can open the file using any standard Zip decompression tool, like Corel WinZip or Apple Archive Utility. After you're done, remember to change the extension back to .mbz if you need to use the file on Moodle again.
It's important to note that while a .MBZ file includes course materials, settings, and activities like quizzes and assignments, it does not include student-generated data such as completed assignments or grades. This means the backup focuses solely on the course structure and content, not on student performance data.
