What is a .MDL file?
An .MDL file is a type of file used in modeling and simulation, specifically created with a program called Simulink, which is developed by MathWorks. Simulink is used for designing and simulating systems through a graphical interface. The .MDL file contains all the necessary information about the simulation model, including diagrams of how different parts of the model interact (block diagrams) and settings for each part (block properties).
The content inside an .MDL file is organized in a structured way, where different elements of the model can have properties, and these properties can have their own sub-properties. For example, a part of the model representing a material might have a property for its layers, and each layer might have a property specifying if it is transparent.
To open an .MDL file, you should use MathWorks Simulink, as it is specifically designed to work with these files. If you need to convert an .MDL file into a different format, such as the MDX format (which is a binary format for 3D models), you can use a tool called MDLX Converter. After converting to MDX, the file can be edited with various 3D modeling tools.
Note: It's important to mention that .MDL files discussed here are primarily for simulation models in Simulink and should not be confused with other types of .MDL files, such as those used in 3D modeling.

Our goal is to help people find the most up-to-date information about file extensions for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. We researched over 10,000 file extensions and their respective programs that open those files. If you want to suggest edits or updates about .MDL file formats, example files, or programs that are compatible. Please contact us.
