What is a .MICRO file?
A file with the .micro extension is a type of file that has been affected by a specific kind of harmful software called TeslaCrypt 3.0 ransomware. This ransomware changes the names of files by adding ".micro" to the end of their original file extensions. For example, a Word document that originally ended in .docx would be renamed to .docx.micro after being encrypted by this ransomware. The files that are typically targeted and encrypted can include documents, images, video game data, and other types of files.
Once a file has been encrypted and renamed with the .micro extension, it becomes inaccessible without the use of a decryption key. This means you cannot open or use the file in its normal way. However, there is a way to regain access to these files. A program called TeslaDecoder can be used to decrypt, or unlock, these files so they can be used again. This program is available for free and was specifically designed to help victims of the TeslaCrypt ransomware.
TeslaCrypt is a type of ransomware that originally spread through an exploit in Adobe Flash. The creators of TeslaCrypt released several versions of this ransomware, each using different methods to encrypt files. TeslaCrypt 3.0, in particular, focuses on encrypting files like Word documents, PDFs, JPEG images, and video game data files. It marks these files with extensions such as .micro, .xxx, or .ttt to indicate they have been encrypted.
In May 2016, the developers behind TeslaCrypt discontinued the ransomware and released the decryption keys needed to unlock files affected by any version of TeslaCrypt. These keys were incorporated into the TeslaDecoder program by a user from the BleepingComputer forum, known as BloodDolly. Thanks to this, users whose files were encrypted by TeslaCrypt can now use TeslaDecoder to decrypt and recover their files without having to pay a ransom.
