What is a .NC file?
An .NC file is a special type of data file used in the manufacturing and engineering world. It is created by a program called CNC Mastercam, which is a set of computer-aided design (CAD) tools. These tools help people design and make mechanical parts. The ".NC" stands for Numerical Control, which means the file contains instructions that tell a computer-controlled machine, like a router, drill, or another tool, exactly how to make a part.
For example, if someone is making a part out of metal, wood, or plastic, they would use Mastercam to design the part and plan out all the cutting paths. Once they're happy with the design, Mastercam saves this plan as an .NC file. This file is like a recipe that the CNC machine follows to cut and shape the material into the final part.
To open an .NC file, you would typically use the CNC Software Mastercam program or the CNC Software Mastercam Learning Edition. These programs understand the instructions in the .NC file and can display them or make changes before the file is sent to the CNC machine.
