What is a .NDX file?

An NDX file is a special type of file that was used in older versions of a computer program called dBASE. dBASE is a tool that helps people organize and manage information in databases. Think of a database like a digital filing cabinet where all sorts of information can be stored in an organized way. The NDX file worked like a guide or a map for dBASE, helping it quickly find and access specific pieces of information in these digital filing cabinets, which are actually other files called .DBF files.

Back in the day, when dBASE was at its version IV, it stopped using NDX files and started using a new type called .MDX files instead. However, if you ever come across an NDX file and need to open it, you would typically use the dBASE program, as it's designed to work with these files.

If you want to make a new NDX file using dBASE, you would go through a process of exporting information from your database. This is a bit like choosing which documents you want to take out of your digital filing cabinet and making a list (the NDX file) that tells you where those documents are. To do this, you would find the specific information you want to export in dBASE, choose to export it to a Neat File, and then save this new NDX file wherever you want on your computer.

To bring information into dBASE from an NDX file, which is called importing, you would tell dBASE to look for a Neat File, find your NDX file on your computer, and then open it. This process is like telling dBASE to use the list (the NDX file) to find and organize specific documents from your digital filing cabinet.

It's also worth noting that NDX files are similar to other file types like .NRX, .NRT, and .NRF, which were used by older versions of a program called Neat. Neat also helps organize information, but it's a different tool from dBASE.
