.NMA File Extension

A .NMA file is a NMEA Data File, created by National Marine Electronics Association.

Open with GPSBabel. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .NMA file?

An NMA file is a type of data file that uses the NMEA format. NMEA stands for National Marine Electronics Association. This format is a standard way to send data about where you are in the world (like your latitude and longitude) and what time it is, in a way that marine (related to the sea) GPS devices can understand. These files are made up of text that's easy to read and they list information about location and time in a specific order.

Even though these files are usually saved with the extension .NMEA, sometimes they might be saved as .NMA files. They contain the same kind of information.

You can open NMA files with a program called GPSBabel. This program is designed to work with GPS data, and it can handle files in the NMEA format. If you're using a computer or a device that can connect to the internet, you can also use an online tool called "NMEA to KML converter." This tool changes NMA files into KML files, which are another type of file that stores geographical data and can be used with many map applications.

The NMEA format is very popular for marine navigation because it can be used by a lot of different devices, like boats' GPS systems, to share data. This data can be sent over various connections such as USB cables, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, UHF radios, and RS-232 cables (a type of cable used for serial communication between devices).

In an NMEA file, the information is organized into sentences. Each sentence starts with a word that tells you what kind of data follows. This makes it easier to understand the information in the file.

So, if you have an NMA file, you can use GPSBabel to open it and see the GPS data it contains. Or, if you want to use the data in a map application, you can convert it to a KML file online with the NMEA to KML converter.
