.OGM File Extension

A .OGM file is a Ogg Media File, created by OriginLab.

Open with OriginLab Origin. Available for Windows and Mac.

What is a .OGM file?

An .OGM file is a type of Ogg Media File, but in this context, it specifically refers to a matrix book file used by Origin, a program designed for scientific and engineering data analysis and graphing. This file contains one or more matrix sheets, which are essentially grids made up of columns and rows. These grids can hold numbers, special characters, or spaces. Additionally, .OGM files include various details about the matrix such as the names of the matrix sheets, mathematical functions, the dimensions of the matrix, as well as style and formatting options, and the type of data stored.

To work with .OGM files, you can use software from OriginLab, such as Origin or Origin Viewer. Origin is a comprehensive tool available only for Windows, and it allows users to create, open, edit, and manage .OGM files. When you open an .OGM file in Origin, it appears within a window as part of an open project, which could be saved as an .OPJ or .OPJU file.

Origin Viewer is another option for opening .OGM files. It is a free tool and is compatible with both Windows and macOS, making it accessible for users who only need to view the contents of .OGM files without the need for full editing capabilities.

To open an .OGM file in Origin, you would typically go to the File menu, choose Open..., then select the "Origin Window .ogm" file type. After that, you navigate to where the .OGM file is stored on your computer, select it, and click Open.

Origin also allows you to save matrix settings as templates, which can be useful for applying the same settings to other matrices you might work on. This is done by choosing File → Save Template As..., which then creates an .OTM file to store these settings.

It's important to note that since the release of Origin 2018, there is a new unicode format for saving matrices, known as .OGMU. This new format offers performance improvements over the older, non-unicode .OGM file format.
