What is a .PDA file?

A .PDA file is a special kind of data file created by a program called SoftMax Pro. This program is used to control devices called microplate readers and to analyze data from microplates. Microplates are small, flat plates with many tiny wells in them, kind of like a miniature version of test tubes arranged in a grid. These plates are used in labs, especially in medical testing, to carry out lots of experiments at the same time.

The data in a .PDA file comes from experiments done with these microplates. For example, scientists might put different chemicals or biological samples in the wells of the microplate, and the microplate reader can detect what happens in each well. This could include changes in color, light, or other signals that indicate a chemical or biological reaction. The SoftMax Pro software can then take the data recorded by the microplate reader, help scientists make sense of it, analyze it in different ways, and show the results visually on a computer.

To open a .PDA file, you need to use the SoftMax Pro software from a company called Molecular Devices. This software is specifically designed to work with these files and the data they contain. It's important to note that the ".pda" file extension is specifically associated with version 5 and earlier of the SoftMax Pro software. Additionally, a piece of hardware called StakMax, which works together with the software, can also create .PDA files.

In simple terms, if you're working in a lab and using microplates for experiments, you might end up with a .PDA file containing all your data. To look at and analyze this data, you'll use the SoftMax Pro software.
