What is a .PGF file?
A .PGF file is a type of picture that is saved in a special way called the Progressive Graphics File format. This kind of picture can be made smaller (compressed) in two ways: one way that keeps all the original details (lossless) and another way that makes the file much smaller but might lose some details (lossy). It can show pictures in different colors like simple colors (indexed color), shades of gray (grayscale), normal colors (RGB color), normal colors with transparency (ARGB color), special lab colors (l*a*b color), and printing colors (CMYK color).
You can open a .PGF file with certain programs like libPGF, NCH Software PhotoPad Photo Editor+, Lemkesoft GraphicConverter, and others that support this format. The cool thing about PGF files is that they were made to be better than the older JPEG pictures. They can be made smaller faster and can hold more detail in a smaller size. Also, you can start to see the picture even if it hasn't fully loaded yet, which gets clearer and clearer as more of the picture data is received. This is great for when you're slowly downloading a picture and want to get an idea of what it looks like right away. Plus, it can handle different sizes of the same picture without needing extra files for small previews like thumbnails.
The PGF format was created around the same time as another format called JPEG 2000 in the year 2000. It was made by smart people at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science at ETH Zurich university, which is a place where people study and invent new technologies.
