What is a .PLM file?
A .PLM file is a type of file that contains source code written in the PL/M programming language. PL/M stands for Programming Language for Microcomputers. It was specifically designed for use with Intel's 8-bit microprocessors, which are a type of small computer chip. These microprocessors include models like the 8008, 8080, 8085, 8086, and 80186. The PL/M language was also used in systems based on the Zilog Z80 microprocessor during the 1970s and 1980s.
The content of a .PLM file includes various declarations and commands (or statements) that tell the computer what to do. These statements are separated by semicolons. To turn the PL/M code into a form that a microcomputer can understand and execute, the code needs to be compiled. This means it is translated into machine code, which is the basic set of instructions that a computer's hardware can directly execute.
Although Intel no longer supports PL/M, there are still some tools available that can work with .PLM files. These include the Intel PLM Compiler for DOS, which compiles PL/M code into machine code. Another tool is PLM2C, which translates PL/M code into C programming language code. This can be useful because C is a more modern language that is widely supported and can be run on current systems.
