What is a .PRC file?
A .PRC file is a type of file used to store 3D models in a format known as Product Representation Compact (PRC). This format is particularly useful for representing mechanical products or assemblies in three dimensions. The PRC format is designed to include all the necessary details of a 3D model, such as its structure, geometry, and product manufacturing information (PMI), which are important for engineers, architects, and other users of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software.
Originally, Adobe Systems developed the PRC file format to facilitate the sharing of 3D models among professionals. This was especially useful in PDF-based documentation workflows, where these 3D models needed to be embedded within PDF files. In the past, software like Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended versions 8 and 9, as well as Adobe Acrobat 3D, allowed users to create new PRC files and embed them into PDF documents.
Although current versions of Adobe Acrobat no longer support the creation of new PRC files, they can still open and view PRC files that were created earlier. This means you can still access and embed these files into PDF documents if they were previously created.
To open a .PRC file, you can use programs such as Adobe Acrobat DC, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, and Foxit Reader. These programs allow you to view the 3D content stored in the PRC files. If you have a PRC file, you can open it using any of these programs to see the 3D model and all its details.
