What is a .R5A file?
An R5A file is a type of file that has been locked by a harmful computer program known as 7ev3n ransomware. This bad software is created by people who want to make money by breaking into other people's computers. When the 7ev3n ransomware gets into a computer, it changes files like documents (.DOCX), pictures (.JPG), PDFs (.PDF), or compressed files (.ZIP) by giving them a new name and making them impossible to open in the usual way. These changed files get a new ending, ".R5A", to show they have been affected.
The good news is that there is a way to fix these files without having to pay the criminals. A kind person on GitHub, known as hasherezade, made a special tool that can unlock or decrypt these R5A files for free. This means you can get your files back to normal without giving any money to the cybercriminals.
To open or fix an R5A file, you would use the decryption tool created by hasherezade. This tool is specifically designed for dealing with files affected by the 7ev3n ransomware.
Back in 2016, many people found their computers attacked by the 7ev3n ransomware. This bad software would lock up various files and then ask the computer's owner to pay a lot of money, specifically 13 Bitcoin, to get their files back. Later, a slightly less demanding version of this ransomware, called 7ev3n-HONE$T, appeared and only asked for one Bitcoin because the decryption tool by hasherezade was already helping people unlock their files for free.
