What is a .RBW file?
A .RBW file is a type of source code file that is written in Ruby, which is a programming language designed to be easy to understand and use. Ruby is known for being object-oriented, which means it's good for organizing and managing complex sets of instructions in a way that makes sense. The .RBW extension is specifically used for Ruby scripts that are meant to work with graphical interfaces, which are the parts of a program that users interact with, like buttons and menus. While Ruby scripts can also have a .RB extension, the .RBW extension tells you that the script is intended for a graphical environment.
To open and work with a .RBW file, you can use several different programs. Ruby itself can run these scripts, as it's the programming language they're written in. Other programs that can open or edit .RBW files include JRuby, which is a version of Ruby that runs on the Java platform, and MacRuby, designed for macOS. For those looking to edit .RBW files, text editors and integrated development environments (IDEs) like Apple Xcode, MacroMates TextMate, and, before it was discontinued, ActiveState Komodo Edit, are suitable choices. Although Komodo Edit is no longer being updated, it was once a popular tool for working with Ruby scripts. Trimble Sketchup, while primarily a 3D modeling software, can also work with .RBW files in certain contexts.
File Viewer Plus, available from the Microsoft store, is another option for opening .RBW files, offering a way to view the contents of these files without needing a specific development environment set up.
In the past, creating a .RBW file involved selecting the window you wanted to export in a program, going to the File menu, choosing Export, selecting where to save the file, naming it, and then saving it. Importing a .RBW file would follow a similar process, through the File menu and then Import, navigating to the file's location, and importing it.
It's worth noting that REAL Software's Real Studio, which was a development environment that could work with .RBW files, became Xojo, Inc. in 2013, marking a transition in the tools available for Ruby developers.
