What is a .RMA file?
An RMA file is a special type of file that is linked to the Rhapsody music service, which is now known as Napster. This file is very important because it helps to make sure that only people who are allowed to listen to certain music can do so. When someone tries to play a song through Rhapsody or Napster, the service checks this RMA file to see if the person has the right to listen to the music. This process is part of what is called Digital Rights Management, or DRM for short. DRM is a way to stop people from sharing music they've downloaded with others who might not have permission to listen to it.
It's important to know that you can't open RMA files with regular programs that you might use to listen to music or watch videos. This is because RMA files are not actual music or video files; instead, they are more like keys that allow you to access the music.
Also, it's easy to get RMA files mixed up with other types of files from RealNetworks, like RM, RA, and RAM files. Those files are different because they are used with RealPlayer to play media, such as songs and videos, which is not the same thing as what RMA files do for Rhapsody or Napster.
One more thing to remember is that even though Rhapsody changed its name to Napster in 2016, it's not clear if Napster still uses RMA files in the same way to manage music rights.
