What is a .RS file?

An RS file is a type of document that is used with the Rust programming language. Rust is a special kind of computer language designed for creating very efficient and reliable software that can do a lot of things at once without making mistakes. People who write software using Rust save their work in files that end with ".RS".

These RS files are basically the instructions or code that tell the computer what to do. Think of it like a recipe that tells the computer how to make a specific dish. Just like how a recipe can be written down in a notebook, edited, and read, RS files can be opened, changed, and read by using certain programs.

Some of the programs that can open and work with RS files include Rust itself (which is both the name of the language and the main tool you use to work with these files), Microsoft Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text, GNU Emacs, and really, any basic text editor. These programs let you look at and change the RS files just like how you might write or edit a letter or a story on a computer.

Once someone has finished writing or editing their RS file, they can use a special tool that comes with Rust, called a compiler, to turn their instructions into a form that the computer can actually run as a program. This is a bit like taking the recipe and actually cooking the dish so you can eat it.

Sometimes, while someone is still working on their Rust code and it's not ready to be turned into a running program yet, they might change the file's name to end with ".rs~" instead of just ".rs". This is a way to remind themselves and others that this piece of code is still a work in progress and not ready to be used just yet.

The Rust programming language, including the use of RS files, has become very popular among big companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon because it helps them build software that works really well and doesn't crash. Because of its importance, a special group called the Rust Foundation was set up in February 2021 to help keep improving Rust and supporting the people who use it.
