What is a .SPDF file?
An SPDF file is a type of protected PDF file that is created using Oracle Information Rights Management (IRM) software. This software is designed to keep documents secure by saving them in a "sealed" or locked format. This means that the file can only be opened and viewed by people who have been given the right permissions.
SPDF files are often used by companies that sell digital textbooks online. This helps to prevent unauthorized sharing of the textbooks since only buyers with the correct permissions can open the files.
To open an SPDF file, you need to use a specific program called Oracle IRM Desktop. This program checks if you have the necessary rights to view the document. If you do, you can open and read the file just like a normal PDF. Oracle IRM Desktop also has features that allow the document's owner to track how the document is being used and to change permissions, such as revoking access, whenever needed.
Additionally, Oracle's IRM technology can be integrated with popular office software like Microsoft Office or Lotus Notes. This integration makes SPDF files appear just like regular PDF files to the user. However, there might be an extra option to "seal" a document when creating or saving it, which activates the protection features.
It's important to note that the technology for creating sealed files was originally developed by a company called SealedMedia. Oracle acquired SealedMedia, and the specific application that used to unseal documents, called SealedMedia Unsealer, is no longer available.
