What is a .SUMOCFG file?
A .SUMOCFG file is a type of configuration file specifically used by a program called Eclipse SUMO, which is a tool for simulating traffic. This file helps in setting up simulations that can include various scenarios involving vehicles and pedestrians in city networks, either on a small or large scale.
The content of a .SUMOCFG file is written in XML format. This means it uses a standard text-based structure to store data, which makes it readable in both specialized and general text editing software. The file includes important settings for the simulation and links to other .XML files that provide more detailed information about different aspects of the simulation. For example, it might reference a NET.XML file, which describes the roads and intersections, and a ROU.XML file, which details the routes, types of vehicles, and specific vehicle behaviors.
Previously, these configuration files were saved with the .sumo.cfg extension, but now they use the .SUMOCFG extension.
To open a .SUMOCFG file, you can use the Eclipse SUMO program itself. If you're using the command line version of SUMO, you can start a simulation by typing `-c [path to file and filename]` or `--configuration-file [path to file and filename]` in the command prompt. If you prefer a graphical interface, SUMO also offers a version with a graphical user interface (GUI), known as SUMO-GUI. In SUMO-GUI, you can open a .SUMOCFG file by going to the menu, selecting File → Open Simulation..., and then choosing the .SUMOCFG file you want to use.
Besides Eclipse SUMO, any XML or general text editor can open .SUMOCFG files because they are essentially text files. This means you can view and edit the file in editors like Notepad++ or even a basic text editor like Notepad, although using SUMO itself is necessary for running the simulations.
It's important to note that .SUMOCFG files are specifically designed for use with the SUMO simulator, and you're unlikely to come across this file type unless you are involved in traffic simulation projects.
Eclipse SUMO, the program associated with .SUMOCFG files, was originally developed by the Institute of Transportation Systems at the German Aerospace Center before its development was moved to Eclipse, a community for open source software.
