What is a .TCVP file?
A .TCVP file is a type of file that has been changed and locked by a harmful computer program called TCVP ransomware. This means that the original file, which could have been a document, video, picture, or any other kind of file, has been encrypted. Encryption is a way to scramble the information in the file so you can't understand or use it anymore. The ransomware adds ".tcvp" to the end of the file's name, so if you had a file named "familyphoto.jpg," it would be renamed to "familyphoto.jpg.tcvp." To try and fix this problem and get your files back to normal, you might use a feature on your computer called System Restore. However, it's important to know that dealing with ransomware can be very tricky and there's no guarantee that System Restore will get your files back.
This problem started happening to some people's computers around November 2022. The TCVP ransomware is part of a larger group of harmful programs known as the STOP DJVU family. Once it has locked your files, it leaves a note in a simple text file (.TXT) in the same folder as the locked files. This note usually tells you that your files have been encrypted and might offer a way to unlock them, but it often involves paying money or following risky instructions.
Computers usually get infected by TCVP ransomware through downloading and installing programs that seem safe but are actually harmful. These bad programs can be disguised as normal software but are bundled with unwanted software that includes the ransomware. So, if you've recently downloaded something from a source you're not completely sure about, that might be how the ransomware got onto your computer.
