What is a .TDE file?
A .TDE file is a special kind of data file that is used by a program called Tableau Desktop. Tableau Desktop is a tool that helps people make charts, graphs, and other visual ways to show information, kind of like drawing on a digital whiteboard to explain something with pictures and data.
The .TDE file contains information that has been taken or "extracted" from somewhere else, like a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel, a Microsoft Access database, or a simple text file that stores data in a straightforward way (known as a .CSV file). Sometimes, this data doesn't come from files on your computer but from places on the internet or other networks that Tableau can connect to and bring data over from.
The main reason to use a .TDE file is because it saves this extracted data in a special way that Tableau understands very well. This is handy because once the data is in a .TDE file, you don't have to go through the trouble of getting the data from the original place again. This can save a lot of time, especially if collecting the data in the first place was complicated or time-consuming.
To open a .TDE file, you need to use Tableau Desktop. Since this file type is specifically designed for Tableau, it's the program that knows how to read the data inside the .TDE file correctly and use it to make all those helpful charts and graphs.
