What is a .VAULT file?

A .VAULT file is a type of data file that was used by a program called Fontcase, which was designed to help people manage their fonts on Mac OS X computers. This file would contain a list of all the fonts that a user had imported into Fontcase, whether those fonts were just for the user, shared with others, or part of the system's default fonts. It didn't just list the fonts, though; it also kept track of whether each font was turned on (activated) or turned off (deactivated), and it stored extra details like how much the user liked the font (ratings).

To open or use these .VAULT files, you would have needed to use Fontcase, the font management software by Bohemian Coding. However, it's important to know that Fontcase was discontinued in 2013, which means it's no longer being updated or supported. Because of this, it might be difficult to find or use Fontcase on newer Mac computers.

It's also worth noting that .VAULT files weren't meant to be opened or edited directly by users. Instead, Fontcase would automatically create and update these files in a specific folder on the user's computer (the [user]/Library/Application Support/Fontcase/ directory). This was all done behind the scenes to keep the user's font collection organized without needing manual intervention.

Since Fontcase is discontinued, if you have .VAULT files and need to manage your fonts, you might need to look for alternative font management software that's compatible with your current operating system. Unfortunately, because .VAULT files were specific to Fontcase, other software might not be able to open or import them directly, and you may need to manually manage your fonts or find a way to convert these files into a format that other font managers can understand.
