What is a .VBM file?
The .VBM file is a type of backup file used by Veeam's software, which helps in backing up and recovering virtual machines. This file doesn't contain the actual backup data but has important information about the backup, like details on how and when the backup was made. It works together with .VBK files, which hold the full backup, and .VRB files for incremental backups.
To open a .VBM file, you need to use the Veeam Backup & Replication program. This software understands how to read the .VBM file and use the information inside it to manage backups more efficiently.
Even though you can restore your backup from a .VBK file without needing the .VBM file, having the .VBM file is very helpful. It makes the restore process quicker because the software can quickly look up information in the .VBM file instead of taking longer to find the same information in the larger .VBK or .VRB files. So, if you're restoring a backup and you have both the .VBK and .VBM files, it's better to use the .VBM file to speed up the process.
