What is a .VIX file?

A .VIX file is a special kind of file used by a video editing program called Lightworks. Think of it as a helper file for videos. It's a bit like a .MXF file, but it's specifically for working with certain types of video files called AVCHD media files, which usually end in .MTS. When you're editing videos in Lightworks, this .VIX file keeps track of video and audio information to make editing smoother and faster.

How do you end up with a .VIX file? When you bring a video into Lightworks to start editing, the program automatically creates a .VIX file for it. This file goes into a special folder named "Material" within Lightworks. The name of the .VIX file will be the same as your original video file, just with ".vix" added at the end. So, if your video file was named "MyVacation.mts," the .VIX file would be named "MyVacation.mts.vix." To open or work with a .VIX file, you really just need Lightworks, the video editing software. It's designed to use these files behind the scenes to help with your video editing projects.

Also, there's a similar file type called .LVIX, which does the same job as .VIX files but is used for different kinds of video files, like those ending in .MOV or .MP4.
