.VSIX File Extension

A .VSIX file is a Visual Studio Extension, created by Microsoft.

Open with Microsoft Visual Studio Code. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .VSIX file?

A .VSIX file is a special type of file that adds new features to Microsoft Visual Studio, which is a program used by computer programmers to create software. Think of Visual Studio as a big toolbox that programmers use to build programs, and a .VSIX file as an add-on that brings in new tools or improves the existing ones.

Inside, a .VSIX file is like a box that contains everything needed for the add-on to work, including a special file called .VSIXMANIFEST that tells Visual Studio all about the add-on and how to install it. Even though it's designed for Visual Studio, you can actually look inside a .VSIX file by changing its name to end with .zip instead of .vsix. This tricks your computer into thinking it's a regular zip file, which is a common type of file used to store many files together in one package. Once you've renamed it, you can open it with any program that can open zip files to see what's inside.

To use a .VSIX file as it's intended, you'll need Microsoft Visual Studio or a related program called Microsoft Visual Studio Code. These programs know how to properly open and install the add-on contained within the .VSIX file, giving you access to the new features or tools it provides. If you're using Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 or newer, or Visual Studio Code, you can open .VSIX files directly in these programs to add the new features to your Visual Studio toolbox.
