A .W3D file is a type of file that is used with Adobe Director, which is a program that people used to create interactive things like games, presentations, or educational content that can be put on websites, CDs, or DVDs. This file contains a 3D scene or animation. This means it can show things in a way that looks like they have depth and can move around, similar to how video games look. These 3D scenes or animations are usually made in another program that is specifically for designing 3D models, and then they are moved into Adobe Director to be added to a project that can be shared online.
To open a .W3D file, you would typically use Adobe Director or Adobe Shockwave Player. However, it's important to know that Adobe Director is no longer being updated or sold by Adobe. The same goes for Adobe Shockwave Player, which was a program that let you play these 3D animations on the web but has been replaced by Adobe Flash Player.
.W3D files can be a part of a bigger Adobe Director movie project (which is saved as a .DIR file) or they can be used by a Shockwave multimedia application that's been put on the internet. Even though Adobe Director and Shockwave Player are discontinued, these files represent an important part of how 3D content used to be shared on the web.
The .W3D format was created together by Intel and Macromedia, which Adobe Systems later bought. The idea was to make it possible for people to create 3D scenes with different tools and then easily share these scenes on the internet through the Shockwave Player.
