What is a .WRUI file?
A .WRUI file is a type of file that has been locked by a harmful computer program called WRUI ransomware. This bad program comes from people who break into computers to cause problems or steal things. When this ransomware gets into a computer, it changes files that could be anything like videos (.MP4), pictures (.JPG), or documents (.DOCX). It locks these files so you can't open them anymore and changes their names to end with .WRUI.
Unfortunately, once your files are changed to .WRUI, there isn't a program that can open them because they are encrypted, which means they are locked in a way that makes them unreadable without a special key. The people who made the ransomware have this key, and they often ask for money to give it to you, which is why it's called "ransomware." In April 2021, some people found out their computers were attacked by this ransomware through two files named B6F6.exe and MicrosoftToolkit.exe. These files were tricky because they looked harmless but actually had the ransomware and other viruses inside. The WRUI ransomware is a kind of STOP ransomware, which is a well-known bad program that locks files. There are other kinds like it that change file names to end with .STOP, .DJVU, .rumba, .gero, or .CADQ.
After locking the files, this ransomware leaves a note named _readme.txt in the folders with the locked files. This note usually asks for money and gives instructions on how to pay to get the files unlocked. However, paying the ransom does not guarantee that you will get your files back, and it's generally advised against.
