What is a .XCF file?

The .XCF file is a type of image file that is specifically made to be used with the GIMP software. GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, and it's a free program that you can download and use to edit images. When you work on an image in GIMP and save it, it gets saved as a .XCF file. This file keeps all the different parts of your image, like layers (different sections of your image that you can edit separately), channels (which help with color adjustments), paths (outlines that you can add or edit), guides (lines that help you align things in your image), and any areas of the image you've selected to work on, all stored separately so you can change them later if you need to.

You can open .XCF files with several programs, not just GIMP. Some of these programs include CinePaint and Kolourpaint, which are also image editing programs. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2023, a professional graphic design software, can open .XCF files too. Other programs like XnViewMP and IrfanView are more focused on viewing images but can handle .XCF files for basic viewing and some editing. Seashore, another image editor, and Photopea, an online photo editor, can also work with .XCF files.

The name XCF stands for "eXperimental Computing Facility," which is a group of students who are really into computer science and like to work on projects to learn more and create new things. This name is a bit of a nod to the origins and community spirit behind the development of GIMP and its file format.
