What is a .XFD file?
The .XFD file extension refers to an XFD File, which is a type of document created using the Extensible Forms Description Language (XFDL). This language is designed to create complex and legally-binding business forms. An XFD file includes various elements such as the layout of the form, digital signatures to verify authenticity, inline expressions (formulas or calculations within the form), and detailed information about business transactions. These features make XFD files suitable for business environments where audit trails, non-repudiation (proof that a transaction has been conducted by the parties acknowledged in the document), preservation of the original context, and high security are necessary.
XFD files are essentially the same as .XFDL files and are primarily used in government and business sectors to standardize the documentation process. These files ensure that all parties in a transaction have a clear, unalterable record of the agreement or transaction, which is crucial for legal and auditing purposes.
To open an XFD file, you can use the IBM Lotus Forms Viewer. This program is specifically designed to handle files created in the XFDL format and allows users to view, fill out, and edit XFD files. It's important to note that the United States Airforce previously used a program called IBM PureEdge Viewer for this purpose, but it has since been discontinued. Users are advised to use the IBM Lotus Forms Viewer instead for accessing XFD files.
