What is a .XFDL file?

File extension: .XFDL File type: XFDL File Description: An XFDL file, which stands for Extensible Forms Description Language, is a type of file that uses XML (Extensible Markup Language) to define the structure and details of a legally-binding business form. These files are designed to capture complex business transaction data, including the layout of the form, transaction details, and any necessary calculations or conditions that need to be met. XFDL files also support digital signatures, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of the form. They are particularly useful for business transactions that require a high level of security, non-repudiation (proof that a transaction has been confirmed by the parties involved), auditability (ability to trace and verify transactions), and preservation of the full context of the transaction.

Programs that can open .XFDL files: 1. IBM Lotus Forms Viewer - This is a specialized program designed to view, fill out, and edit XFDL files. It is particularly useful in environments where the security and integrity of the form data are paramount. 2. Microsoft Notepad - Included with Windows operating systems, Notepad can open XFDL files as plain text. However, using Notepad only allows you to view the raw XML code without the formatted layout or interactive features. 3. Notepad++ - This is a more advanced text editor available for Windows. It can open XFDL files and provides better features for handling XML files, such as syntax highlighting and tree view of the XML structure. 4. Any text editor - Besides Notepad and Notepad++, any basic text editor can open XFDL files to display the raw XML content. This includes editors like TextEdit on macOS or gedit on Linux.

More Information: XFDL files were developed from the Universal Forms Description Language (UFDL) and adapted to include XML formatting to enhance their capabilities in electronic business and government transactions. The format was designed to ensure that business forms are standardized and can be exchanged seamlessly across different systems.

Historical Note: IBM acquired PureEdge Solutions, which originally developed the technology behind these forms. The United States Airforce, a previous user of the PureEdge Viewer software for handling XFDL files, has now moved to using the IBM Lotus Forms Viewer instead. This change underscores the shift towards more robust and supported software solutions for handling XFDL files in sensitive environments.
