What is a .XMWX file?
A .XMWX file is a type of file known as a SofTest Working Exam File. It is used by a program called ExamSoft SofTest, which is an application designed for taking exams. This application can be used on computers that run Windows or macOS. The .XMWX file contains the contents of an exam that someone has started but has not yet completed.
Here’s how it works: When a person begins an exam using ExamSoft SofTest, the exam initially exists as a .XMZX file. Once the exam starts, this file is transformed into a .XMWX file. This new file (.XMWX) holds all the ongoing answers and data, and it updates itself every 60 seconds to ensure all changes are saved. After the person finishes the exam, the .XMWX file is then converted into another file type called .XMDX. This final file type (.XMDX) is then automatically uploaded to ExamSoft's cloud servers for storage and analysis.
If for some reason the .XMDX file does not upload automatically (perhaps due to a lack of internet connection), it can be manually uploaded. This file can be found in the "Answers" directory of the SofTest program.
To open and work with a .XMWX file, you will need to have the ExamSoft SofTest application installed on your Windows or macOS computer. This application is specifically designed to interact with .XMWX files, as well as the other related file types (.XMZX and .XMDX).
ExamSoft, the platform behind these applications and file types, is widely used in various educational and professional settings, including K-12 education, undergraduate programs, and professional fields like medicine and law. It helps institutions administer tests and assessments digitally, ensuring a streamlined process for both the test takers and the administrators.
