What is a .XP file?
An .XP file is a type of music file specifically used in the Fasttracker 2 program, which was developed by Starbreeze Studios. This program runs on the MS-DOS operating system. The .XP file contains what is known as an "Extended Pattern" for a song. Essentially, it is a segment of music that includes various musical notes and sounds arranged in a specific sequence.
The structure of an .XP file is organized into patterns. Each pattern is made up of multiple rows and columns. By default, a pattern has 64 rows, but it can be expanded up to a maximum of 1,024 rows. The columns in these patterns are used to configure different aspects of each musical note. For example, columns can specify which instrument is used, the volume of the note, and any special effects that should be applied to it.
Users of Fasttracker 2 can use these .XP files to piece together different patterns to form a complete song. These complete songs are saved as .XM modules, which are also associated with Fasttracker 2.
To open an .XP file, you will need to use the Fasttracker 2 program by Starbreeze Studios. This is the primary software designed to work with .XP files, allowing users to edit or play the patterns stored within these files.
