.XSX File Extension

A .XSX file is a Visual Studio XML Schema Layout File, created by Microsoft.

Open with Microsoft Visual Studio 2022+. Available for Windows.

What is a .XSX file?

An .XSX file is a type of file used by Microsoft Visual Studio, which is a program that helps people create software. This file contains settings for how parts of a program should be arranged or displayed. Specifically, it deals with XML schemas, which are like blueprints for how certain data in a program should be structured. These settings are saved in a file with the .XSX extension.

Originally, when developers used Microsoft Visual Studio to design these blueprints using a tool called the XML Schema Designer, the program would automatically create an .XSX file. This tool was first available in Visual Studio 2005 but was removed in later versions starting from Visual Studio 2008. Microsoft brought back a new version of the XML Schema Designer in Visual Studio 2010, but this new version and the ones that followed do not create .XSX files anymore.

If you are working with older versions of Visual Studio (specifically versions before 2010) and you accidentally delete an .XSX file, you don't need to worry too much. You can get the file back by simply closing the XML schema you were working on and then opening it again. This action will regenerate the .XSX file.

To open an .XSX file, you will need to use Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 or newer versions. This is because these versions of the software are designed to recognize and handle .XSX files properly.
