What is a .YENC file?
A .YENC file is a special kind of file that has been changed from its original form (binary, which computers understand) into text form using a method called yEnc encoding. This method is better than some other ways of changing files into text, like Base64 and uuencode (.UUE), because it doesn't add as much extra stuff to the file. This means the file can be made smaller and sent more easily.
People usually use yEnc encoding for files they want to share over Usenet (a kind of discussion system on the internet) or through email. To make sure the file doesn't get messed up or broken when it's being sent, yEnc files have something called a CRC checksum. This is like a special check to make sure the file is still okay after it's moved from one place to another.
If you have a .YENC file, you can open it using specific programs designed to understand and decode it. Some of these programs include yydecode, UUDeview, Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe, yDec, yEnc32, yProxy Pro, and for Mac users, Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe Mac 16. There's also a program called yEnc TZ that can help with these files.
It's also worth noting that sometimes yEnc files might end with a .YNC extension instead of .YENC, but they are essentially the same kind of file.
