What is a .ZPAQ file?

A .ZPAQ file is a special kind of computer file that acts like a storage box where you can keep many other files together in one place. This is useful because it makes the files smaller using a method called the ZPAQ algorithm, which is free for anyone to use. Imagine you have a big room full of toys, and you have a magic box that can make those toys smaller so you can fit them all into a smaller box. That's kind of what the ZPAQ file does with computer files.

This magic box is really strong because it can hold up to 250 terabytes of data. To give you an idea, 1 terabyte is about the same as 1,000 gigabytes, and one gigabyte can hold around 500,000 pages of text. So, 250 terabytes can hold a lot! Also, it has a special lock, called AES-256 encryption, which means only people with the key can open the box and see what's inside. This keeps your files safe from people you don't want to see them.

The ZPAQ file can be made in different ways, with five levels of how much it can make the files smaller or how fast it can do it. You can choose if you want it to be super fast but not make the files as small, or make the files really small but take a bit longer.

To open this special box (.ZPAQ file), you need certain keys or tools. Some of these tools are called ZPAQ, PeaZip, and ConeXware PowerArchiver. These are programs on your computer that let you open the box, see what's inside, or put more things into it.
