What is a .BOOKEXPORT file?
A .BOOKEXPORT file is a special type of file that acts as a backup for books created using a program called BookSmart. BookSmart was a free application that people used to design their own photo books, notebooks, and planners. When you create a book in BookSmart, it saves your project as a .BOOK file, which includes all the text and layout details of your book. Along with this .BOOK file, all the images you've added to your book are also saved. The purpose of a .BOOKEXPORT file is to make a backup of your book project. This is really useful if you want to keep a safe copy of your work in case something goes wrong, or if you want to share your book project with another BookSmart user. Even though BookSmart has been discontinued, meaning it's no longer updated or supported, these .BOOKEXPORT files can still be important if you have old projects you want to keep or share.
To make a .BOOKEXPORT file in BookSmart, you would go to the File menu, then choose options like Export → Export Book Project, Create Book Archive, or Export/Backup Book. This process bundles your .BOOK file and all the images into one .BOOKEXPORT file.
If you have a .BOOKEXPORT file and you want to open it, you would again go to the File menu in BookSmart, but this time choose Import Book Project. There's also an option to Import a Book from the "More Options" menu when you start up BookSmart.
Even though BookSmart is no longer available, if you have the program installed or if you're using a computer that still has it, you can use these steps to back up or share your BookSmart projects.
