.BOOK File Extension

A .BOOK file is a FrameMaker Book File, created by Apple.

Open with Apple iBooks Author (Discontinued). Available for Mac.

What is a .BOOK file?

The .BOOK file extension is used for a project file created by FrameMaker for book design, but it's also notably used by iBooks Author. This program was specifically designed for creating digital books intended for viewing on the Apple iPad. When you work on a digital book using iBooks Author, you're essentially putting together all the different sections and chapters of your book into one file, which is the .BOOK file.

This type of file is quite versatile because once you're done creating your book, you can export it into the .IBOOKS format. This format is ready to be transferred directly onto an iPad for reading. Alternatively, if you're looking to reach a wider audience, you can publish your work to the Apple iBookstore. For this purpose, you would convert your .BOOK file into the .ITMSP format, which is accepted by the iBookstore.

However, it's important to note that Apple iBooks Author, the program primarily associated with creating .BOOK files, has been discontinued. This means that while existing .BOOK files can still be opened if you already have the program, getting the software for new users might be challenging.

The .BOOK file isn't just limited to iBooks Author. It's also the main file type for BookSmart, a program used for creating various types of printed books, like wedding albums, cookbooks, guestbooks, notebooks, and yearbooks. BookSmart offers different page layouts and themes, including photo borders and page backgrounds, to make each book project unique. When you start a new book project in BookSmart and save it, the program saves your work as a .BOOK file. This file contains all the content of your book. If you need to back up or share your project, you can export it as a .BOOKEXPORT file.

To create a .BOOK file in BookSmart, you would go to the File menu, choose New → Book Project, and then save your project by going to File → Save. BookSmart automatically keeps your .BOOK file updated with any changes you make.
