What is a .VSMETA file?

A .VSMETA file is a type of metadata file specifically used by the Synology Video Station application. This file is in binary format, which means it is not directly readable by humans but can be processed by computers. The .VSMETA file stores important details about a video, such as its title and description. These details are used by Video Station to organize and display information about videos.

When you use Video Station, which is a program for organizing and watching videos, it usually fetches information about each video automatically from the internet. This information is stored in a central database. However, if you decide to change or update the information about a video manually within Video Station, the program creates a .VSMETA file. This file then holds the updated metadata you provided, and Video Station uses this file to display the updated information about the video.

Additionally, the .VSMETA file includes a thumbnail image of the video, which is used in Video Station’s interface to represent the video visually. It's important to note that Video Station saves the .VSMETA file in the same directory as the video file it pertains to. Therefore, if you have videos in different folders and you edit their metadata, you will find a .VSMETA file in each of those folders.

To open and manage .VSMETA files, you need to use the Synology Video Station application, which is accessible via a web interface. This means you can manage your videos and their metadata from any device that has a web browser, as long as it is connected to the network where your Synology device is set up. This setup is particularly useful if you want to access your video collection remotely, such as watching movies stored on your home computer while you are traveling.
