What is a .EVT file?
An .EVT file is a type of file that the Windows Event Viewer program creates. This program keeps track of different activities happening on a computer, like when software is installed or if an error occurs. The .EVT file is like a diary for the computer, recording events with a special ID and some extra details, all saved in a special way that only certain programs can read.
To open and look at an .EVT file, you can use the Microsoft Event Viewer, which comes with Windows, or a program called Microsoft Winrep. These files are important because they help people figure out how well the computer is working or what went wrong if there's a problem.
However, to properly see what's inside an .EVT file, your computer needs some extra files (called .DLL files) from the program that made these event logs. If these .DLL files aren't there, you might see an error message saying it can't show the event details. There's a tricky way to still see the .EVT file without these .DLL files by changing some settings in the Windows registry, but it's not really recommended because it can be risky.
Sometimes, .EVT files are put inside another type of file called .CAB, especially if they were saved using the Windows Reporting tool, known as Winrep. It's also worth noting that newer versions of Windows, like Windows 7, use a different format called .EVTX for these logs, but the Windows Event Viewer can still open the older .EVT files too.
