What is a .EVTX file?

An .EVTX file is a type of file used by computers running Windows 7 to keep track of different things that happen on the computer, like when a program starts or stops, or if there are any errors. Think of it as a diary for the computer, where it writes down everything that happens. This file is made in a special way that only certain programs can read it, and you can't just open it like a text document or a picture.

To look at what's inside an .EVTX file, you need to use a program that comes with Windows 7 called Event Viewer. This program is like a key that unlocks the diary so you can read it. Event Viewer is part of the computer's operating system, which means you don't have to download or install anything extra to use it.

Windows 7 keeps track of many different types of events in five main categories: Application, Security, Setup, System, and Forwarded Events. Each category is like a chapter in the diary, focusing on different aspects of what the computer does.

If you want to see what's written in this diary, you have to open the Event Viewer. You can find it by going to the Control Panel, then looking under Administrative Tools. Once you're in Event Viewer, you'll see a folder on the left side called "Windows Logs." Click on this, and you'll see the different categories. You can explore each category to see the events that have been recorded.

If you find something interesting or important and you want to keep a copy, you can save it. In the Event Viewer, after you've chosen a category, go to the "Action" menu and select "Save All Events As..." This lets you save the information from the diary to a file on your computer.

It's important to know that in older versions of Windows, before Windows 7, these log files had a different extension, .EVT. But in Windows 7, they changed it to .EVTX. The older .EVT files are now called "Legacy Event Files" because they're from the older system.
