What is a .FFU file?
A .FFU file is a Full Flash Update Image File. This type of file is created by Microsoft and is used to update the software on Windows phones. It includes all the necessary information to update the operating system and partition a drive or an SD card. This means it can change how the phone's storage is organized and update the phone's software all at once. The file contains one or more packages that help in updating the phone.
To open a .FFU file, you can use the Windows Phone Software Recovery Tool. This tool is specifically designed to work with phones like Lumia and HTC One that run on Windows Phone 8 or newer versions. FFU files are mainly used to send updates to Windows Phones. Before these updates can be sent to a phone, they need to be securely signed. This is a security measure to ensure that only trusted updates are applied to the phone. Microsoft signs the images that are sent to phones sold in stores.
Because FFU files are quite large, you might not be able to transfer them to your phone using a USB flash drive due to size constraints. Instead, you might need to use a different network location or a larger storage drive. If needed, you can also split the FFU file into smaller parts to make handling easier.
There's a tool called ImageApp, which comes with Windows, that allows you to add new or updated packages to an existing FFU file. However, it's important to note that you cannot use ImageApp to remove packages from an FFU file.
Remember, the Windows Phone Recovery Tool, which opens FFU files, is mainly for Lumia phones and HTC One models that use Windows Phone 8 or later versions.
