.NBES File Extension

A .NBES file is a Nbes Ransomware Encrypted File, created by N/A.

Open with System Restore. Available for Windows.

What is a .NBES file?

A file that ends in .NBES is a file that has been locked by a harmful computer program called Nbes ransomware. This bad program is a kind of STOP (Djvu) ransomware that started causing trouble around the beginning of 2020. When a file has ".nbes" at the end of its name, it means the file has been changed in a way that you can't just rename it to make it openable again.

To deal with files that have been changed by this ransomware, one suggested method is using System Restore on your computer. This doesn't open the .NBES file directly but can help return your computer to a state before the files were locked, if you have a restore point set up before the infection happened.

The Nbes ransomware works by sneaking into your computer and locking your files with a very strong lock called AES-256 encryption. The bad people who did this then ask for money to unlock the files. They usually get into your computer by tricking you into clicking on bad links or downloading harmful files from emails that look real but aren't, from downloading files from risky websites, or from clicking on fake ads or posts on social media.

Once the ransomware is on your computer, it starts locking various types of your files, like your spreadsheets (.XLSX), PDFs (.PDF), pictures (.PNG), videos (.MP4), and even backup files (.DB), by adding ".nbes" to the end of each file name. So, a picture named "vacation.jpg" would be changed to "vacation.jpg.nbes". After doing this, the ransomware leaves a note in each folder that has a locked file. This note, usually a text file named "_readme.txt", tells you that your files have been locked and gives you instructions on how to pay them money to get your files back.

It's very important to know that paying the ransom does not guarantee that you'll get your files back. It's better to try safe methods like System Restore or seek help from professionals who deal with cyber security.
